Shipping Your Car South: A Snowbird's Guide

Auto transport routes, timing, pricing factors and how to avoid the most common problems.

Each fall, thousands of snowbirds ship cars from the Northeast, the Midwest and Canada to Southwest Florida, then ship them back in spring. Demand peaks in October–December heading south and in March–May heading north, so book early.

Broker or carrier?

Most companies you find online are brokers that hire a licensed carrier for your route. That's normal. Ask who the actual carrier will be, and check its USDOT and MC numbers with the FMCSA. A broker should also have its own FMCSA broker authority.

Open or enclosed?

What affects the price

Get at least three quotes. Be wary of a quote far below the others, because it may never get a carrier to accept it.

Other options

The Amtrak Auto Train runs between Lorton, Virginia, and Sanford, Florida, if you'd rather ride with your car. Some snowbirds keep a second car in Florida and use car storage over the summer.
